How to survive Christmas……and actually enjoy it!

This time of year brings much excitement and much stress. It can be an enjoyable time but it can also be a time where we overindulge and step outside what we would consider our normal eating/drinking patterns.

I talk a lot about not beating yourself up for having fun, but also moderation.

Much of this holiday season is centred around celebrations involving food and drinking, and parties and catching up with family and friends before the year is out. There is a definite sense of ‘time is running out’ that is promoted by those who want you to spend money before the year is over.

We go to bed late only to get up and do it all again the next day with the expectation that our bodies will just follow.

We let our workouts slip and neglect getting to the gym. There isn’t time for everything and we make compromises.

Humans like routine. Humans like predictability for the most part. We like to know what is coming so that we can plan for it. We like to be prepared.

So how does that relate to Christmas?

You can survive and actually enjoy Christmas if you stick to your routine, or part of it.

  • Get out of bed at the time you normally would
  • Train at your regular times
  • Drink the same amount of water that you normally would

Even if you are away from your home you can still follow these principles. Your training doesn’t need to be in your regular gym. You just need to keep moving – it promotes great digestion.

Keeping the time you get out of bed the same, will help your body recognize some stability in your circadian rhythms – take a short nap in the afternoon if you find you aren’t going to make it through the evening festivities.

We tend to drink less water when we are out of our regular routines because the prompts that remind us to stay hydrated are no longer there. Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go. I make sure mine is filled whenever I leave the house and that it is heavy, so drinking it makes the bottle lighter to carry as I go.

Don’t let slip the things that are important to your health and you will find that you will have a much more enjoyable holiday season!

See you in the gym
